Interventions View

Interventions are a complex aspect of clinical trials comparison. For this iteration we chose only to represent drugs used by arm within trials and by each intervention period (during pregnancy, during labor, postpartum mother and after birth infant).

Our design uses the horizontal axis to represent time so that treatment is covered from beginning to end. This axis is not linear, but consists of segments that cover pregnancy in weeks, labor from onset to delivery, and both mother and child postpartum periods in weeks. For clarity, there is a separation between interventions for the mother and child.

Coloured bars show drugs applied to each arm. A legend on the bottom of the chart associates each drug with a colour. The trial Connor Arm ZDV uses the drug zidovudine and the Arm PL uses placebo.

There are cases where two drugs are used, for example, Arm d4T+ddl of Gray, where 2 drugs (Didanosine and Stavudine) are given together, during pregnancy and labor and then to the infant. To indicate that multiple drugs were given, bars may be colored with two or more colours.

Note that we are using 2 asterisks to indicate the arms that were stopped early

Tool tips displaying the beginning and end of the treatment are shown when the user hovers over a bar.

The user can select and filter on drug administered using check boxes in the bottom part of the chart. This filtering will potentially alter the number of trials in the visualization and all related views will be updated simultaneously. If we are interested in knowing which trials used Nevirapine or Lamivudine, we de-select all the other drugs, and leave Nevirapine and Lamivudine check out
