Follow these steps to get a glimpse of Jambalaya's functionality. There are also tutorials within the Protégé application to learn how Protégé works.

  1. Install and run Protégé, as described in the Installation section of this manual.
  2. Load the Newspaper example:
From the open project dialog which appears upon starting Protege, select Open Other>newspaper> newspaper.pprj; this can also be achieved from Project > Open...
  3. Under the Project menu, choose Configure A pop-up window will appear.
  4. Under the Tab Widgets tab, put a check mark beside Jambalaya and click on OK. A new Tab labelled Jambalaya will appear within Protégé.
  5. Click on the Jambalaya tab. In the window which appears, entitled Choose Working Set, select the classes you wish to visualize, or leave as-is to visualize all classes. The screen (below) will divide into three panels (Classes, Direct Instances, and the Main View).
  6. Within the Classes panel on the left side of the screen, click on the Library class.
The view in the Jambalaya Tab will zoom on the Library node. An instance of the Library class will be displayed in the Direct Instances panel.
  7. Click on San Jose Mercury News in the Direct Instances panel.
The Jambalaya view will zoom on the "San Jose Mercury News" node. The node will change to show the Protégé form for the instance, available for editing (below).
  8. In the Classes panel, click on the symbol to the left of Author to show the subclasses. Notice the corresponding Jambalaya node also opens to show this.
  9. In the Classes panel, click on Editor.
The Jambalaya Tab will animate a path to the Editor node under Author. Move your mouse over some of the objects on the main view. Tooltip labels are shown based on what object is under the mouse. This can identify arcs for you, for instance.
  10. Invoke the context menu by right-clicking anywhere on the screen. For some operations, such as Open Node, you must right-click the object on which you want to operate. Under Tools, select Arc Type Filter to see the Arc Filter Palette. Scroll down in the palette to make sure the responsible_for relationships are turned on. Note the responsible_for relationships (arcs) between the Chief Honcho node and the other three nodes (below).
  11. Invoke the context menu again and select the Edit > Change Hierarchy.. option. Using this option, you can choose the nesting relationship within the Jambalaya Tab. Scroll down to select the responsible_for relationship. The display will change to reflect this.
  12. In the Direct Instances panel, click on Chief Honcho.
The Jambalaya view will zoom on the Chief Honcho node. The children of Chief Honcho (in this context, representing those people for whom Chief Honcho is responsible) will be displayed.

Try some of the operations described above. The next walkthrough describes some more advanced exploration techniques, and illustrates other features of the JambalayaTab.
